Construction debris has significant potential value. Its reuse reduces the strain on the environment, stimulates the local economy and provides safe, affordable housing for those at the bottom of the social ladder.
In the Netherlands, we use debris as a foundation under roads, dikes and in sound barriers. But houses are usually constructed using new raw materials.
In disaster areas and emerging economies debris is pushed aside, resulting in environmental pollution and a destruction of capital. Construction debris is however an excellent raw material for construction.
